Mid to late spring rains in 2014 really saved the day for this harvest. Worries of drought and water shortages scared everyone through a long, dry January, but we were almost back to a normal water level by summer (almost). We tried to be very proactive in our vineyards by dropping fruit and keeping the crop load to a minimum so as to not stress the vines in a dry year. Harvest came at right about the same time as the previous vintage, maybe a week earlier for some varietals. It was another incredible year for quality.
We harvested the grapes for our Zinfandel in the middle of the night in mid September from our Frost Ranch. The grapes were hand sorted in the vineyard, then destemmed and 50% crushed and put into tank for a 4 day cold soak. The must was punched down by hand once per day during the cold soak, then twice per day during fermentation. The finished wine was drained off the skins, and the skins were gently pressed at very low pressures. The wine was racked twice in its lifetime, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Our 2014 Zinfandel has deep roasted strawberry and blueberry aromas in the nose that are complemented by hints of white pepper, warm cinnamon and a touch of vanilla. The fruit continues with bright strawberry and blackberry flavors on the front palate. The tannins are wet and juicy and the touch of acidity at the end balances everything out.
